Jabal Al Akhdar’s “Run & Explore” Trail Race Concludes with 610 Runners from 24 Nations
October 17, 2025The Himam Trail Run Race announces a new addition to its 2025 lineup: the Old Capital Trail (35KM) — a route designed to connect runners with the historic heart of Oman while delivering an exhilarating mountain-running experience. Scheduled to take place from 11 to 13 December 2025, the 6th Edition of the race continues to expand its course portfolio, building on Himam’s commitment to innovation, community, and cultural storytelling through sport.
The Old Capital Trail pays tribute to Nizwa, Oman’s ancient capital and a centre of trade, learning, and resilience. The course begins near Nizwa Fort, one of the Sultanate’s most iconic landmarks, and leads runners through date palm groves, village paths, and the traditional irrigation channels known as aflaj before climbing toward the foothills of Jabal Akhdar. The route then descends toward Birkat Al Mouz, the home base of the Himam Trail Run Race, where participants finish amid the ruins of old settlements and centuries-old watchtowers.
Technically classified as a 35-kilometre mid-distance mountain race, the Old Capital Trail offers approximately 1,600 metres of positive elevation gain. The terrain features a mix of rocky ascents, narrow wadis, and heritage trails, making it ideal for experienced trail runners seeking a balance of challenge, speed, and scenery. Aid stations positioned at key altitude points will provide hydration and local nutrition, reflecting Himam’s ongoing partnership with communities along the course.
“This new trail adds a cultural dimension to the 2025 edition — it’s more than a race, it’s a journey through the living history of Oman,” said the Himam team. “The Old Capital Trail bridges ancient trade routes and modern endurance, connecting runners to the heritage that shaped this region.”
The introduction of the Old Capital Trail expands the Himam Trail Run Race 2025 lineup, which now includes:
• The Hajar ULTRA (120KM) — an ultimate test of stamina across Oman’s most demanding terrain.
• Skyward Canyon (60KM) — a high-altitude route through dramatic canyons and ridges.
• Old Capital Trail (35KM) — a new cultural and technical challenge.
• Scenic Sprint (20KM) — a fast, accessible route for rising athletes and recreational runners.
As with all Himam races, the new course has been carefully mapped using advanced GPS technology and verified through multiple reconnaissance runs to ensure accuracy, safety, and minimal environmental impact. The design process was guided by the Himam operations team in collaboration with experienced mountain guides and local authorities in Nizwa and Al Dakhiliyah Governorate.
The addition of the Old Capital Trail reinforces Himam’s broader mission of integrating Omani culture into the sport of trail running, positioning the Sultanate as a destination where endurance meets heritage. By linking modern athletes to historical landscapes, the race invites participants to experience Oman’s story with every stride — from fort to falaj, and from village to valley.
