Mandatory kit & equipment

1Why is a mandatory kit required?
Trail running in the Hajar Mountains involves remote terrain and rapidly changing weather. The mandatory kit ensures runners are self-sufficient, can respond to emergencies and remain safe until help arrives. What is the mandatory kit for the Hajar Ultra (≈110–118 km)? For the ultra distance race, each runner must carry: • Running backpack • Warm clothing (jacket, leggings) • Sunglasses and sun cream • Windproof/waterproof jacket • Food reserve • Mobile phone • Gloves • Trekking poles (if used, they must be carried from the start) • Head torch with spare batteries • Survival blanket • Trail running shoes • Beanie or warm hat • GPS watch • Contingency cash • Cap for sun protection • Whistle • Minimum 1.5 L of water • First aid kit Refusal to have mandatory equipment checked results in disqualification. Missing items incur time penalties. What is the mandatory kit for Skyward Canyon (≈55–60 km)? The shorter ultra and long distance races require similar equipment, but warm clothing and gloves are not obligatory. Each runner must carry: • Running backpack • Sunglasses and sun cream • Windproof/waterproof jacket • Food reserve • Mobile phone • Trekking poles (optional) • Head torch with spare batteries • Survival blanket • Trail running shoes • GPS watch • Contingency cash • Cap for sun protection • Whistle • Minimum 1.5 L of water • First aid kit
2Will my kit be checked?
Yes. All gear is inspected during race pack collection and may be spot checked during the race. Runners must carry their kit from start to finish.
3Are trekking poles allowed?
Trekking poles are allowed, but if used they must be carried from the start; picking up poles en route will result in a penalty.

Race pack & bib collection

1When and where do I pick up my race pack?
Race pack collection takes place on specified dates in the week before the race. Participants will be notified of times and locations (usually in Birkat Al Mouz and Muscat). You must collect your pack in person; proxies are not allowed.
2What do I need to bring to collect my race pack?
Bring a valid photo ID (passport, national ID or driver’s licence) and all mandatory gear for inspection. You will also be required to sign a waiver acknowledging the risks of trail running.
3Can someone else collect my race pack?
No. Participants must collect their race packs themselves.

Course & navigation

1How is the course marked?
Routes are marked with flags, tape and reflective markers. Runners must follow the designated route; short cutting the course or missing checkpoints leads to penalties or disqualification.
2Are there aid stations and checkpoints?
Yes. Aid stations are positioned at regular intervals (typically every 7–12 km). They offer water, electrolytes, fruit, snacks and, on longer races, hot food. Major checkpoints provide medical support and drop bag access (for the ultra distance). Each checkpoint has a cut off time; leaving after the time limit results in disqualification.
3What happens if I miss a checkpoint or cut off time?
Participants who fail to pass a checkpoint or who arrive after its cut off time will be removed from the course and recorded as “DNF” (did not finish). Skipping a checkpoint intentionally leads to time penalties or disqualification.
4Can I use GPS navigation?
A GPS watch is recommended and is part of the mandatory kit for long distances. However, runners must still follow course markings and are responsible for staying on the official route.

Support & crew

1Can I have a support crew?
Crews are only allowed at designated aid stations. Outside of these zones, receiving assistance (food, drink or equipment) results in a time penalty.
2Is there a drop bag service?
For the ultra distance race, one drop bag per runner is allowed at a designated aid station (usually the halfway point). Runners must label their bags clearly.
3Are pacers allowed?
No pacers are permitted; participants must complete the race under their own power.

Safety & medical

1What medical support is available?
Medical staff and volunteers are stationed along the course, and ambulances are on standby for emergencies. The race organisers operate an emergency phone number and coordinate rescues if needed.
2Do I need a medical certificate?
For long distances, runners should be in good health and ideally have clearance from a physician. A medical certificate may be requested during registration.
3What should I do if I or another runner is injured?
Stop and assess the situation. Use your phone or the emergency whistle to call for help. Not assisting a person in difficulty incurs a penalty. If you witness a serious injury or a runner in distress, you are required to offer assistance and inform race officials.
4What are the emergency numbers?
Emergency contacts are provided during the briefing and in the race guide. Save them to your phone before starting.

Travel and Accommodation

1How do I get to Oman?
The easiest way to travel to Oman is by air. Fly to Muscat International Airport; there are direct flights from many major cities.
2Do I need a visa?
Yes. A tourist visa is required to enter Oman. Check the visa options for your nationality; some visas can be obtained on arrival. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your stay.
3How do I travel from Muscat to the race venue?
From Muscat, travel by rental car, taxi or organised shuttle to Al Hamra, Nizwa or Birkat Al Mouz. Pre booked shuttles operate between Birkat Al Mouz and the start lines. Local taxi services (e.g., OTAXI) are convenient for short journeys.
4Where should I stay?
The race organisation provides a list of preferred hotels and guest houses in Nizwa and Al Hamra. Accommodation ranges from heritage inns to modern apartments. It is advisable to book early, as rooms fill quickly.
5What is the weather like?
December in Oman offers ideal running weather: mild daytime temperatures and cooler conditions at higher altitudes. Pack layers and be prepared for cold nights in the mountains.
6What should I wear off the trail?
Oman is a conservative country. Dress modestly in public—loose fitting tops and trousers covering arms and legs. Smart casual attire is recommended for the prize giving ceremony.

Culture & environmental responsibility

1What cultural etiquette should I follow?
Respect local customs by dressing modestly, greeting people politely and asking permission before photographing residents. During the race, be courteous to villagers and other trail users.
2How can I minimise my environmental impact?
Stay on marked trails, avoid cutting switchbacks and do not pick plants or disturb wildlife. Carry all litter (including food scraps) to the next aid station—discarding waste on the course carries a penalty. Use reusable bottles rather than single use plastic. Follow the Leave No Trace principles and respect farmland and heritage sites along the route.

Training & preparation

1How should I train for the Himam races?
Allow several months of preparation. Focus on building endurance, hill strength and technical running skills. Train on trails similar to the course (rocky terrain, steep ascents and descents). Practise running with your mandatory kit and nutrition strategy. Consider joining the Himam Training Camp (held in November) for specialised coaching and course familiarisation.
2Do I need special equipment?
In addition to the mandatory kit, consider bringing: cap, sunglasses, towels and personal toiletries. Trail specific shoes with good grip, hydration vest and poles (for long climbs) are recommended.
3Does Himam offer training resources?
Yes. The Himam Training Camp provides guided runs, workshops and coaching led by experienced trail runners. The race organisers also share training tips and route previews via social media.

Race day logistics

1What time do races start?
Start times vary by distance. In recent editions, the Hajar Ultra, Skyward Canyon and Old Capital Trail races start at 07:00 AM, while the Scenic Sprint starts at 3:30 PM.
2Is there transport to the start line?
Yes. A shuttle service transports runners from the race village in Birkat Al Mouz to the start lines. Shuttle schedules are provided in the event program.
3Are there toilets on the course?
Portable toilets are available at the start, finish and major aid stations. Plan accordingly in remote sections.
4How is timing handled?
Timing chips are integrated into the race bib. Results are available live at checkpoints and published online after the race.
